This is a blog : the 13th : Don’t tell Mom the babysitters dead

Your 17 years old and your Mom tells you she’s going on vacation for two months . Summer break here I come! Until she tells you that she’s hired a babysitter to watch you and your five other brothers and sisters. As if.

That’s what happened to Ellen Crandell played by Christina Applegate. This sweet old woman of course is just an act till the mom leaves and as luck would have it for these kids, she actually died in her sleep. What’s to do but to get rid of the body right? Now the real fun can begin. Right?

As the brothers and sisters soon realize they have no cash and no food. It’s up to Ellen to get a job to help make ends meet. First she works at Clown Dog. What a drag.

Your kidding me right? Ellen had to get out quick.  She realizes her passion is in fashion! So with no contacts and no history of any college she forges a resume and applies to General Apparel West to be a receptionist.

Rose Lindsey played by actress  Joanna Cassidy, loves her resume so much she offers her a job as an administrative assistant. What luck! She soon realizes working at a high end job has its perks!
Soon she takes a little petty cash here and a little petty cash there, just to help out her brothers and sisters. It’s totally justified. Still not getting the hang of adult responsibilities Ellen soon finds herself in a web of lies, stolen cash, and a boyfriend she can’t keep lying to. Oh, and her company she now works for is about to go under. What’s a seventeen year old to do? Ellen takes it into her own hands and comes up with a design that saves the company! Unfortunalty during the party her mom comes home early! Busted.
Rose soon finds out the company was saved thanks to Ellen and even offers her the job as her personal assistant! Her reply ” I’m going to college first.”  The movies ends in a quirky note when Ellen’s Mom asks where the babysitter Mrs. Sturak is.  Well… she’s somewhere.

Be sure to check out this film with an all-star cast. Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy, John Getz, Keith Coogan, Josh Charles, Concetta Tomei, David Duchovny, Kimmy Robertson, Jayne Brook, Eda Reiss Merin, Robert Hy Gorman, Danielle Harris, Christopher Pettiet, Jeff Bollow, and Michael Kopelow keep it quirky and funny all throughout.

This is a blog : the 12th : Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

romy-and-michelle-2

High School Reunions. They always stop and make you think what you’ve accomplished in life. It can be positive or depressing as hell. So you’ve gained a little weight and don’t have the latest gadgets. It won’t matter right? Right?

romyand michelle

In this 1997 comedy film, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino. These two hip 28-year-old women have not achieved much success in life and decide to invent fake careers to impress former classmates at their 10 year high school reunion. Romy works as a cashier in the service department of a Jaguar dealership; Michele is unemployed. They are both single and unambitious. Romy encounters former high school classmate, Heather Mooney (Janeane Garofalo), who informs Romy about their upcoming 10-year high school reunion back in Tucson, Arizona. At first excited at the prospect of attending, Romy then has the realization that they will not be able to make a good impression at the reunion. Desperate to impress their former classmates, Romy and Michele make last-ditch attempts to improve themselves to avoid the bullying they endured, mostly at the hands of the “A-Group”, led by cheerleader Christie Masters (Julia Campbell).

romy-and-michele-image-1-640x360

I graduated on 2007 that’s the 10 year anniversary of the movie Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. I most associate with the character of that of Romy played by Mira Sovino. I felt like I was always the instigator of whatever group I was with. I was also more considered “one of the guys” so to speak. Today 8 years after graduating I wrestle with finding a job, being a certain weight, and even struggle with slight depression. This movie makes me feel like I can do anything! It always makes me comfortable with who I am. I was laid off after working 3 years having an actual career and now every day I spend my time on jobsites or craigslist trying to find the next big thing. I am constantly reminded by my parents that I am overweight. In high school I had a steady weight of 100 pounds now I’m 170. I’ve also actually been married since 19 but never experience dating because no one went out with me in high school. I have yet to have my high school reunion but you don’t see me trying to prove myself to anyone. So I like to eat fast food every once in a while, when did that become a crime? So I’m still currently living with my parents, I don’t have a job and my husband alone can’t afford it.

Romy-and-Michelle

In these last 8 years I can say I’ve been married 5 years, been through 3 apartments, paid for my own car, pay my own car insurance, pay for my phone bill, have volunteered a lot of my time, learned how to make hair bows, was a successful photographer, take care of my own cat, and well lots of other things. Happiness is what makes you happy. Don’t let someone else tell you how to live your life. Be you. Romy and Michele taught me two things; love yourself, and screw what everyone else thinks.

romy and michele

Romy: All I ever wanted was for people to think that we were better than we were in high school. And now we’re just a stupid joke, just like we always were.

Michele: Romy, can I tell you the truth? I never knew that we weren’t that great in high school. I mean, we always had so much fun together… I thought high school was a blast! And until you told me that our lives weren’t good enough, I thought everything *since* high school was a blast. I think we should go back out there as ourselves, and just have fun like we always do. The hell with everyone else!

This is a blog : the 11th : Underrated Christmas Movies

Mixed Nuts

11174379_800

Mixed Nuts is a 1994 American Christmas comedy film directed by Nora Ephron and stars Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, Anthony LaPaglia, Garry Shandling, Juliette Lewis, and Adam Sandler.

When I first watched this movie I was surprised, I had never seen it since it is a Christmas Movie. The classic comedy actually didn’t do that well in the box office and was listed as one of the worst films ever made. Don’t let that stop you from watching this movie. This movie has laughs, love, and even a transvestite (played by Liev Schreiber). Every actor and actress delivers a great performance in this movie. We just have so many better Christmas movie selections now that it’s hard to appreciate and love the classics. If you like the movie Clue this movie is similar in ways but with a Christmas story. I guess you’d understand if you actually watched it. This is a movie I watch every year and strongly recommend if you want to watch a classic comedy.

Trapped in Paradise

Trapped_in_Paradise-962800291-large

Trapped in Paradise is a 1994 Christmas-themed crime comedy film written and directed by George Gallo, and starring Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey. I like this movie because it takes a story of crime and robbery and turns it into a moral. This movie teaches morals and life lessons and hey Nicolas Cage’s character even gets the girl at the end for making the right choice. This is a great family movie for the holidays.

Rare Exports A Christmas Tale

untitled

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a 2010 Finnish horror-fantasy-thriller film directed by Jalmari Helander about people living near the Korvatunturi Mountain who discover the secret behind Santa Claus. The film is based on a 2003 short film, Rare Exports Inc., by Jalmari and Juuso Helander. This movie (not an English film) is a great Christmas movie. The music and art in this film is that like Tim Burton. I would compare this movie to watching the Thing but for to where kids can watch it.

Rare_exports

The film focuses on a group of local reindeer herders whose Christmas is disturbed by excavations on the mountain. A scientist has ordered a team of workers to dig open what he calls “the largest burial mound in the world”. An explosive used by the team uncovers what is referred to as a “sacred grave”. However, the occupant of the grave is still alive.

Rare-Exports-Santa-movie-best-movies-ever

Soon, the reindeer important to the local people are mysteriously killed, and children and supplies begin to disappear from the town. It emerges that the occupant is the source of the original Santa Claus myth; a supernatural being who, rather than rewarding good children, punishes the naughty. One family, however, manages to catch the culprit in a trap, and plans to sell it to the scientist to cover the losses caused by his excavation.

This is a blog : the tenth : Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

If you love Michael Caine and Steve Martin check out the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This comedy also stars Glenne Headly. The screenplay was written by Dale Launer, Stanley Shapiro, and Paul Henning.

michael-caine-dirty-rotten-scoundrels-1988

Lawrence Jamieson (Caine) and Freddy Benson (Martin) are both conmen. Though their occupation is the same they both con for different reasons. Caine’s character cons for a lavish lifestyle while Martin’s character steals just to get free meals. This movie mostly takes place in the French Riviera. As these two characters meet they put together the biggest heist, to swindle an American heiress of 50,000. Through the conning we have lots of laughs. We also start to see that the “heiress” isn’t even an heiress at all and falls in love with Martin’s character.

dirty rotten scoundrels

I loved the style of this film. It’s a great movie to watch whenever with whomever. The score of this film is great. The music consists of a ‘30s jazzy score by Miles Goodman.

MV5BMTMzMjg2MzIyNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDU0NzQzNA@@__V1_SX640_SY720_

As I researched this movie, I found out some surprising details. Wikipedia states that this movie was originally written for Mick Jagger and David Bowie by Dale Launer. I imagine if the movie would have such a success as it did if they starred in it. Also Michael Caine was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy but lost to Tom Hanks in Big.

This is a blog : the ninth : Seems Like Old Times

If you’re looking for a great comedy love movie Seems Like Old Times should be playing on your TV right now. If you have Netflix add this movie to your list. This 1980 film stars Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn, and Charles Grodin.

xseems-like-old-times-goldie-hawn-chevy-chase_jpg_pagespeed_ic_O1sSPJdriw

Nick Gardenia (Chase) was forced to rob a bank and becomes a fugitive. He then seeks help from his ex-wife Glenda Parks (Hawn), a public defender. She is currently married to Ira Parks (Grodin) a LA county district attorney who hates Nick. Nick finds his way to Glenda and Ira’s house. Glenda finds him hiding in her garage and decides to help him while at the same time hiding it from her husband.

SeemsLikeOldTimes8

This film has a lot of laughs and a lot of great supporting actors and actresses. As I watched this movie I didn’t expect it to be as good as it was. I thought to myself, “Oh another Chevy Chase movie.” I personally don’t like his movies that much because I believe all the National Lampoon movies he’s in are so overrated. As I watched this film I was surprised and was thrown for a loop. I loved the chemistry between all three actors. I really felt like what I was watching was a real story. Goldie Hawn delivered a great performance as well. She had a sweet, genuine demeanor about her in this film. We feel bad for Ira throughout this film as he has no clue what is going on.

SeemslikeOldTimes-Still6

This is a great movie to watch with your girlfriends or with family as long as you admire classic films. If you are looking for a similar movie a 1942 film The Talk of the Town is about a wrongfully accused man hiding out at the home of a beautiful woman.

This is a blog : the eighth : The Out of Towners

I have never seen this movie until now. As I scrolled through Netflix I saw a picture of Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. It has to be good I thought. I was right.

out-of-towners-1999-DI-4

This 1999 movie the Out of Towners is a remake of a 1970 film by the same name. Henry (played by Steve Martin) and Nancy ( played by Goldie) are from Ohio. We see that Henry has lost his job but doesn’t tell his wife. After leaving for New York Nancy gets lonely and basically follows him onto the plane. Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong in this movie. Although its probably very unlikely all these things would happen to a person, its a great comedy. There “lovely” trip involves being rerouted to Boston, their luggage lost, mugged, cards being declined, thrown out of hotel, robbed, and chased by police. “Only in New York,” Steve Martin’s character says. Don’t worry thou everything turns out great at the end and he gets the job and they start their new life in New York.

98e6b8ba776dd67af3ea0007e8717edc

I was shocked when I read on Wikipedia that it didn’t even get a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I love this movie. Its a movie you can watch every year. As I watch this movie during the Christmas time, I connect more to the characters. I love Christmas because “everyone is happy no matter what” is what I say. Thou this isn’t a Christmas movie, most of the movie scenes are at night and the clothing they wear is that of coats and jackets because I’m guessing its the winter time.

Thou I’m not a big fan of Goldie Hawn’s daughter Kate Hudson, Goldie delivers a great performance. She is just a wife trying to be there for her husband thou she isn’t quite sure she wants to be with him now that the kids are out of the house. She sticks by her man through it all.

60287-TheOutof-13122925368_32

Steve Martin plays a great role as well. Thou he has the world on his shoulders and time is ticking to get to his job interview, we see a character that is determined. We see his character Henry tell off Nancy a few times but he wants this job for her; to provide for her.

001e3fb4_medium

You will not be disappointed if you take a chance on this movie. You won’t think “oh man I wasted my time.” Thou not one of the popular movie you hear about this movie will make you laugh and even possibly cry. Don’t all sapping love movies?

This is a blog : the seventh : May

While watching May you almost feel bad for her character. The movie May came out in 2002. I wouldn’t catagorize this under horror but more psychological horror. This film stars Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, and James Duval.

may (1)

The film is about a girl named May (played by Bettis). She receives a doll on her birthday from her mom but can’t open it. May ,older, works at a veterinary hospital assisting surgeries. May is “off” and weird. She talks to her doll and throughout the film because she has no friends, and as May gets angry, the glass cracks. We see May has a lazy eye that traumatized her childhood growing up. She sees an eye doctor and get contacts and also get more courage to talk to Adam. He is a mechanic that May watches and has a crush on. She loves his hands. They start dating while May’s co-worker (played by Anna Faris) hits on her. May goes to Polly (Ferris) when she is sad and they become friends. Polly has a beautiful neck (according to May). Throughout the film we see May trying to connect with people. But with friends comes consequences. As Adam and May get closer, Adam sees that May is more crazy than weird. When he dumps her May because hysterical and does what her dolls inscription says “If you can’t find a friend, make one.”

traumaMAYtot4

As I watch this movie I notice that there isn’t that much music, so if you’re okay with no music most of film, then watch this movie. I like this movie because this movie is about connection. When we are alone we can go crazy. Humans need contact. We need comfort. With May, we see how little things can add up and can make someone do whatever it takes to get that comfort.

Now in the beginning of this blog I said we feel bad for May. This is why. May is a normal person. She just has no friends because she her lazy eye made her self-conscious. As she is introduced to weird elements and top of thinking she hears her doll talk back we see her emotions come out. She doesn’t know how to react to things so she freaks out. People who have no one to talk to based their actions on their own thoughts. This film takes a girl that is so full of love and warmth but makes her into a disturbing girl.

mayboymqdefaultmay_movie

Critics praised the film for its unique feel while also complimenting its brutality through the eyes of someone who is so caught up in their own fantasy of sorts. Roger Ebert granted the film four stars out of four, and called it “a horror film and something more and deeper, something disturbing and oddly moving”

This is a blog : the sixth : Artifact

The best music artist documentary I have watched would have to be Artifact. In 2012, Thirty Seconds to Mars showcased the music industry in this film. Thirty Seconds to Mars decides to leave EMI so EMI sues for $30 million because of a breach in contract in 2008. Shortly after This is War is made.

72d82188ef7cdfef3a7491706df3654b

Have you ever been so mad at someone or something you just want to scream? I am a park person. I like going to parks late at night when its chilly. The cold air calms me and is therapeutic for me. Jared Leto likes to throw rocks off cliffs. We all have our ways we de-stress. This film was a big middle finger back to EMI from Thirty Seconds to Mars basically saying don’t mess with the artists. This film focuses on the relationships between labels and artists.

In August 2008, the band attempted to sign with a new label after completing the A Beautiful Lie tour. This in turn prompted EMI to file a lawsuit stating that the band had failed to produce three of the five records they were obligated to deliver under their 1999 contract. Thirty Seconds to Mars responded to by stating that under California law one cannot be bound to a contract for more than seven years. The band had been contracted for nine years, so they decided to exercise their legal right to terminate.

26ef6ceee3b0082ec378bb69882f613f

Jared Leto, his brother Shannon Leto, and Tomo Milicevic throughout the film are in progress of making their new album. The documentary was going to be about the band but since the EMI got in the way Jared Leto made it be known he wasn’t going down without a fight. We see throughout the film how Guy Hands played a big role in EMI as TF chairman. This billionaire takes over EMI Virgin Records and basically didn’t know anything about the music industry. Other musicians give their first-hand accounts of their own experiences in the business throughout this film as well.

Thirty Seconds to Mars were millions of dollars in debt to EMI yet never got paid. After nearly a year of legal battles, Thirty Seconds To Mars announced on April 28, 2009, that the suit had been settled. Jared Leto explained, “The California Appeals Court ruled that no service contract in California is valid after seven years, and it became known as the De Havilland Law after she used it to get out of her contract with Warner Bros.” Thirty Seconds to Mars then signed a new contract with EMI. Leto said that the band had “resolved our differences with EMI” and the decision had been made because of “the willingness and enthusiasm by EMI to address our major concerns and issues, [and] the opportunity to return to work with a team so committed and passionate about Thirty Seconds to Mars.”

Leto told Rolling Stone that “I hope that artists and audiences watch this film and get a greater understanding of how things work [in the record industry], because understanding is the beginning of change.”

5a5650f7555d9570ae6d4c07a30650e3

On a sidenote I would love to meet Jared Leto one day. Not as a crazed sex fiend girl but as a intellectual smart woman only wanting to be friends.

This is a blog : the fifth : Mr. Nobody

Let me start by saying I wish Ive seen this movie when I first heard about it and stopped putting it off. Mr. Nobody delivers stunning performances by various actors and actresses throughout the film. I call a movie like Mr. Nobody a “life” movie which means it tells a story of someone’s life.

mrnobody_featured

This 2009 indie, science fiction drama film was written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael, produced by Philippe Godeau, and starred Jared Leto. Sound familiar? Yeah the guy who sings in 30 Seconds to Mars. Let’s not forget he was an actor before he was a singer. Any My So-Called life fans out there?!

mr-nobodyjkjh

In 2092 Nemo Nobody is about to turn 118 and he is the last mortal on Earth. Humans have found a way to stay mortal through renewing cells. The world is watching Mr. Nobody and his psychiatrist Dr. Feldheim put him under hypnosis to ask about his life. Mr. Nobody tells his life but no one is sure what is real and what is not. He tells the story if how his parents met, how he fell in love, and how he had to make an impossible choice. Nemo is 9 and has been put into a position where he must make an impossible decision – to choose between his mother and father. In the seconds preceding the rest of his life he wonders where each choice will take him. Alternate life paths are shown throughout the film and how each one takes us down different roads. The tale of Nemo Nobody reflects a life of choices, whether or not we made the correct choice and what would happen if we could go back and change them. In the reveal Mr. Nobody age 118 states that it doesn’t matter what we choose, because each choice, once made has just as much significance as any alternate choice.

mr-nobody

Mr. Nobody is a tale about choice. The forces of the universe working to bring about total chaos are counteracted by this boy’s overactive imagination. The dilemma that causes the film’s main problem (not knowing the future) once solved makes it all the more difficult – “I don’t know the future, therefore I cannot make a decision. Now that I know the future I still cannot make one.”

tumblr_lnifmsOq8v1qg644jo1_500

Like the movie The Sixth Sense, color plays a vital role in this film as symbolic meanings. Among each storyline a color is represented. The first scene we see this in is when Nemo is a kid and he sees three girls on a bench. They are his possible future wives: Jeanne, Elise and Anna; one in yellow, the other in blue, the third in a red dress. The color blue is associated with Elise where Nemo experiences depression and despair. The color yellow is associated with Jeanne where Nemo has wealth and seeks independence. The most important is the color red. This symbolizes Nemo and Anna’s relationship and their love for each other. The underlying color used is white. White sygnafies that all things are possible until a choice is made.

mr-nobody-jared-leto-diane-kruger

Over the years Mr. Nobody has become a cult film for its philosophy and cinematography, personal characters and Pierre Van Dormael’s soundtrack.
Actors and actresses in this movie include the following ; Jared Leto, Toby Regbo, Thomas Byrne, Sarah Polley, Clare Stone, Diane Kruger, Eva Green, Juno Temple, Linh Dan Pham, Audrey Giacomini, Rhys Ifans, and Natasha Little.
Mr. Nobody has philosophical underpinning inspired by scientific tomes on chaos theory and the butterfly effect, pigeon superstition, and the space-time continuum. Louis Morin is a visual effects supervisor who worked on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and also on this film.
The soundtrack features songs by Pierre Van Dormael, Buddy Holly, Hans Zimmer, Otis Redding, Eurythmics, Pixies, Wallace Collection, Nena, Ella Fitzgerald, and The Andrew Sisters, as well as versions of “Mr. Sandman” performed by The Chordettes, The King Brothers, Emmylou Harris, and Gob, and recordings of compositions by Erik Satie and Benjamin Britten, among others.

This is a blog : the first : The Mysteries of Laura

608692_654x440

Hello everyone. A lot of people these days believe they are real bloggers. That they type and that it’s good. A real blogger naturally writes. They don’t need to use big words or blog about something that’s popular like mustaches (oh gawd what were we thinking) just to get followers. Real bloggers you can get in their head. Real bloggers you feel as if you are the writing the blog yourself. Just because you have a Facebook does not make you a blogger. I’m here to tell you that I am a blogger. Always thinking but never writing. So here I go…

As I type watching The Mysteries of Laura on Hulu, I smile. Growing up reading those Nancy Drew books and always being so fascinated, watching CSI Las Vegas, and with the idea of Sherlock Holmes character, I always felt as if mysteries were calling me. Oh and Debra Messing is also one of my favorite real actresses.

mysteries-of-laura

You aren’t watching The Mysteries of Laura you say?  Well your missing out. This hip, fist pumping, always quirky mystery comedy series will deliver. Debra Messing ( known for Will & Grace) is recently soon to be divorced cop who only wants to solve the who-dunnit just to get home to her rumbustious children just to solve who to watch her kids while she’s gone. With each episode we see her grow as a mother and grow in herself. Now for you guys out there watching a show about a mother cop doesn’t appeal your interest. I get that. But did I forget to mention her boss is her husband! I smell controversy. With working with your soon-to-be ex comes constant tug a war and with two kids “Laura” has so much on her plate. Her husband Jake played by Josh Lucas ( from Sweet Home Alabama) is a sassy, manipulative, yet charming character. With his smooth voice we, and sometimes Laura, fall into his whimsical ways. There’s also more comedy as Max Jenkins character plays Laura’s assistant or should we say intern. For when the show is lacking in comedy they bust out the intern just to keep it going.
