This is a blog : the fifth : Mr. Nobody

Let me start by saying I wish Ive seen this movie when I first heard about it and stopped putting it off. Mr. Nobody delivers stunning performances by various actors and actresses throughout the film. I call a movie like Mr. Nobody a “life” movie which means it tells a story of someone’s life.

This 2009 indie, science fiction drama film was written and directed by Jaco Van Dormael, produced by Philippe Godeau, and starred Jared Leto. Sound familiar? Yeah the guy who sings in 30 Seconds to Mars. Let’s not forget he was an actor before he was a singer. Any My So-Called life fans out there?!

In 2092 Nemo Nobody is about to turn 118 and he is the last mortal on Earth. Humans have found a way to stay mortal through renewing cells. The world is watching Mr. Nobody and his psychiatrist Dr. Feldheim put him under hypnosis to ask about his life. Mr. Nobody tells his life but no one is sure what is real and what is not. He tells the story if how his parents met, how he fell in love, and how he had to make an impossible choice. Nemo is 9 and has been put into a position where he must make an impossible decision – to choose between his mother and father. In the seconds preceding the rest of his life he wonders where each choice will take him. Alternate life paths are shown throughout the film and how each one takes us down different roads. The tale of Nemo Nobody reflects a life of choices, whether or not we made the correct choice and what would happen if we could go back and change them. In the reveal Mr. Nobody age 118 states that it doesn’t matter what we choose, because each choice, once made has just as much significance as any alternate choice.

Mr. Nobody is a tale about choice. The forces of the universe working to bring about total chaos are counteracted by this boy’s overactive imagination. The dilemma that causes the film’s main problem (not knowing the future) once solved makes it all the more difficult – “I don’t know the future, therefore I cannot make a decision. Now that I know the future I still cannot make one.”

Like the movie The Sixth Sense, color plays a vital role in this film as symbolic meanings. Among each storyline a color is represented. The first scene we see this in is when Nemo is a kid and he sees three girls on a bench. They are his possible future wives: Jeanne, Elise and Anna; one in yellow, the other in blue, the third in a red dress. The color blue is associated with Elise where Nemo experiences depression and despair. The color yellow is associated with Jeanne where Nemo has wealth and seeks independence. The most important is the color red. This symbolizes Nemo and Anna’s relationship and their love for each other. The underlying color used is white. White sygnafies that all things are possible until a choice is made.
